See’s Candies Halts Production Just Before Easter Thanks to Coronavirus, First Time Since WWII

Posted on 28 March 2020

See’s Candies is halting candy production just before the busy Easter holiday thanks to the Chinese coronavirus.

It is only the second time in the California-based candy company’s 99 year history that they have stopped production — the first time being during World War II.

“Given the current events with COVID-19, and our concern for the health and safety of our employees, we have made the decision to initiate an interruption once again,” See’s said in a statement. “We will work to keep you updated as we develop plans to safely resume operations.”

In an email to customers, the candy company wrote that, “See’s is proud to have a legacy of Quality Without Compromise. In our 99-year history, we have had only one interruption in our ability to share our American-made delicious candy, and that was during WWII due to rationing. Given the current events with COVID-19, and our concern for the health and safety of our employees, we have made the decision to initiate an interruption once again.”

The company produces more than 26 million pounds of candy each year.

Their website is shut down entirely, with a simple message that reads “See’s is always focused on bringing joy to our customers. We are very sorry to have to say that sees.com is not taking orders at this time. In recognition of the guidance provided by local health authorities, See’s has suspended production and shipping of product. We will work to keep you updated as we develop plans to safely resume operations.”

The LA Times reports that “the first See’s store opened in Los Angeles in 1921 by a trio of Canadian immigrants: Charles See; his wife, Florence; and his mother, Mary. That grandmotherly face on See’s trademark black-and-white boxes belongs to Mary See, and her recipes were the foundation of the operation.”

Customers who previously placed orders with credit cards will receive refunds within the next 2 weeks.
