WNBA, Shannon Sharpe Outraged Over Atlanta Owner’s Opposition to BLM

Posted on 09 July 2020

Hang down your head, Sen. Kelly Loeffler. Confess your white privilege! Take the perp walk and admit you were dead wrong for criticizing Black Lives Matter. God knows you deserve to go to sports owners purgatory and join ex-Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling there. That's just what Shannon Sharpe (Fox Sports 1 TV, The Undisputed) is implying. Co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, Loeffler is an outlier in the ultra-progressive Women's NBA, practically an outpost for Black Lives Matter. In a letter to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, she expressed her opposition to the BLM movement and asked the league to require every player's jersey include a U.S. flag when league action resumes later this month. Making matters all the worse for the Left is the fact that Loeffler is a United States senator and a Republican to boot! It's all too much for Sharpe, a self-appointed cancellation cop. Sharpe discounted Loeffler on Wednesday's episode of The Undisputed because she was appointed to the Senate by the governor of Georgia, not elected. Speaking out of both sides of his mouth to co-host Skip Bayless, Sharpe demonstrated inclusiveness only runs one way and Loeffler deserves to be in the hall of shame along with that other Donald -- Donald Sterling: "Skip, I don't see how she remains in her role as an owner of the Dream. Because her messaging and her brand, what she's aligned with, does not seem to align with the inclusiveness of the WNBA. I could be wrong. Maybe I'm over-reading it, but I don't think I'm wrong on this one, Skip. This might be the WNBA's Donald Sterling moment. Now the WNBA Players Association tweeted 'ENOUGH. OUT.' Everything capitalized." The WNBA takes a back seat to no league for wokeness, and some of its players "made it abundantly clear they're not comfortable with her (Sen. Loeffler) being in that role as a co-owner of the WNBA." While Sterling was forced to sell the Clippers and banned from the NBA for life in 2014 after private recordings of racist comments he made became public, a racist charge can't honestly be made against Sen. Loeffler. This is a cancel culture moment, pure erasure, the Left imposing its will and telling the Right not to do likewise. Loeffler is opposed to the WNBA's decision to display the phrase Black Lives Matter at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where it plans to hold its 2020 season. The staunch supporter of President Trump exposed BLM for the intolerant movement it is, courageously telling the commissioner: "I adamantly oppose the Black Lives Matter political movement, which has advocated for the defunding of police, called for the removal of Jesus from churches and the disruption of the nuclear family structure, harbored anti-Semitic views, and promoted violence and destruction across the country. I believe it is totally misaligned with the values and goals of the WNBA and the Atlanta Dream, where we support tolerance and inclusion." Sen. Loeffler's letter says she was "incredibly disappointed to read about efforts to insert a political platform into the league. The truth is, we need less -- not more politics in sports. In a time when polarizing politics is as divisive as ever, sports has the power to be a unifying antidote. And now more than ever, we should be united in our goal to remove politics from sports." Sharpe, who famously said Tim Tebow should not even be allowed to play baseball, guessed that "they probably not gonna play until she goes, because of the inclusivity of what they try to provide in the WNBA. They accept all, black, white, LGBTQ ... it doesn't matter. We wanna be treated the same, and that goes against what she's preaching. Because she had a big issue with the blacks that are protestin' with firearms and what when the whites were protestin' with firearms. Because she's pro-Second Amendment. … Skip, I believe she gonna have to go! ... I don't believe she stays." Inclusivity in the WNBA? Ha! Don't make your viewers laugh, Sharpe! This league has been called the most far-Left sports league in America. A Christian player, Candice Wiggins, retired from the WNBA, claiming she didn't feel accepted in a league with a dominant lesbian culture. This is a league that's about as inclusive as the Democratic Party is of pro-lifers. Loeffler said she wasn't consulted about the BLM court displays, and she is recommending a commonsense idea for players to include the flag in its licensed apparel. This is completely unacceptable to enraged current and former WNBA players, and several of them -- Sheryl Swoopes, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Natasha Cloud, Alysha Clark and Sue Bird --  asked Engelbert to remove Loeffler as co-owner of the Dream. Swoopes tweeted that the "WNBA MUST do better." A former player for the Dream, Layshia Clarendon, bitterly denounced her former boss, too.  The WNBA responded by stating it will continue to pursue social justice and that Loeffler is not involved with the day-to-day operations of the Dream.
