Within moments of the Biden campaign announcing Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) as their pick for Vice President, TV journalists were already condemning criticism of her as either “racist,” “sexist,” or both.
Virtually no discussion of the Biden campaign’s choice was complete without the insightful remark that Harris was, in fact, a woman of half-black and half-Indian descent. The general consensus on broadcast and cable news was that this was a very brave thing for Harris to be, and that team Biden’s selection was both laudable and “bold” because of it.
These discussions were riddled with preemptive defenses of Harris from the “racist” and “sexist” attacks that journalists insisted were sure to come from the Trump campaign. Watch the video below for a sampling of the media’s hand-wringing defense of Harris.
Shortly after the pick had been announced, CNN was already abuzz with the kind of language one would expect from a woke liberal cable network in 2020. White House reporter Jim Acosta warned that Trump might use “racially incendiary” language to attack Harris. Political reporter Nia-Malika Henderson added that Harris would be up against the “very powerful” forces of both racism and sexism.
The morning after the announcement, Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie asked former Obama official Susan Rice: “Do you worry about racism and sexism affecting this race with Kamala Harris on the ticket?”
On ABC’s Good Morning America, co-host Robin Roberts asked a similar question to Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN):
There has been criticism already of Kamala Harris and many feel that some of the remarks have been sexist, something that you had to deal with during the primary. So how do you feel that that perhaps will be a factor in the coming months?
It appears the pro-Biden media believe there’s still some political capital left to wring out of the “everyone who disagrees with me is racist” dishrag.
Either virtually every journalist on every liberal cable and broadcast network independently reached this conclusion at the exact same time, or (more likely) they're acting on unofficial marching orders. Incidentally an ultra-feminist group called We Have Her Back, populated by prominent Democrats like Valerie Jarrett, recently put out a press release demanding that the media never question the VP pick's electability, experience, likeability, or (heaven forbid) her qualifications.
