At least three migrant children have drowned in the Rio Grande in the past two months trying to illegally enter the U.S. from Mexico in answer to Joe Biden’s open borders policy for unaccompanied migrant children and families with young children. A week ago a nine-year-old girl and at least one teenaged boy drowned in separate incidents yet there has been no statement by Joe Biden, Kamala Harris or Jen Psaki, nor have any questions been asked by White House reporters about the drownings. The drowning of an eight-year-old boy in February was similarly ignored. While the media has reported on the latest drowning, it has not tied the death to Biden like they did to President Trump with a similar migrant child drowning in 2019. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was not asked about the child drownings when she was recently interviewed on Fox News Sunday by Chris Wallace.
The Biden-Harris administration is turning back some young families at the border, but currently a majority of those encountered are being allowed to stay while all unaccompanied children get a free pass to stay. (“Although the Biden administration says its policy is to “expel” families to Mexico under a pandemic health order, the most recent CBP data shows that only about 10 to 20 percent are being turned back. The rest are typically released into the United States with a notice to appear in court…” Washington Post, March 28)
NBC Nightly News reported on the most recent drowning, but did not connect the death of the child to Joe Biden reversing President Trump’s closed border policies by making it known to the world he will not turn away children from the border, thereby setting off a record surge of child migrants and young families. The report features an interview with the mother, Araceli Franco Cruz, who spoke about her deceased daughter Magabi. Her other child on the journey, three-year-old son Damian Alexander, barely survived the drowning incident.
In 2019, the drowning of a father and child in the Rio Grande was used by Harris, Democrats and the media to savage President Trump over his efforts to gain control of the border and stop mass illegal immigration.
Then Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Twitter, June 25, 2019, “These families seeking asylum are often fleeing extreme violence. And what happens when they arrive? Trump says, ‘Go back to where you came from.’ That is inhumane. Children are dying. This is a stain on our moral conscience.”

“That is inhumane. Children are dying. This is a stain on our moral conscience.” Apparently Kamala Harris’ moral conscience does not get triggered when children drown under the Biden-Harris administration’s policy of encouraging children and families to illegally enter the United States where they are promised they will be allowed to stay.
Then-Democrat presidential candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke also blamed President Trump:
Trump is responsible for these deaths. https://t.co/UZirFjh3fm

A check of the Biden White House website shows no statements on the child drownings, nor any questions asked by reporters of Biden or Psaki in transcripts of Q&As. The the personal and government Twitter accounts of Biden and Harris show no comments on the child drownings. The only mention of the border crisis in the past week is a tweet by Harris on Biden appointing her to lead diplomatic efforts on migration from Central America.
.@POTUS asked me to lead our diplomatic work with Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. To address the situation at the southern border, we have to address the root causes of migration. It won’t be easy work—but it's necessary.
— Vice President Kamala Harris (@VP) March 25, 2021
Harris spokeswoman Symone Sanders later told reporters, “”I will just reiterate that the @VP is not doing the border. The president asked the vice president to take on the diplomatic efforts with Mexico and countries of the North Triangle to address the root causes of migration.”
Excerpt from announcement by Biden appointing Harris:
And I can think of nobody who — who is better qualified to do this than a former — this is a woman who ran the second-largest attorney general’s office in America — after the U.S. — after the United States Attorney General — in the state of California, and has done a great deal upholding human rights, but also fighting organized crime in the process.
So it’s not her full responsibility and job, but she’s leading the effort because I think the best thing to do is to put someone who, when he or she speaks, they don’t have to wonder about is that where the President is. When she speaks, she speaks for me. Doesn’t have to check with me. She knows what she’s doing, and I hope we can move this along.
But — so, Madam Vice President, thank you. I gave you a tough job, and you’re smiling, but there’s no one better capable of trying to organize this for us.
Reports on migrant child drownings since Biden took office on January 20:
A Honduran boy drowned as he attempted to cross the Rio Grande dividing Mexico and the United States, Mexican immigration officials said Thursday.
The National Immigration Institute said in the statement that the 8-year-old “was in the company of various adults on a small island between the two countries, but couldn’t withstand the pounding water, which covered him and kept him submerged for several meters.” The migrants were attempting to cross the river at Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
His body was recovered, but attempts to revive him failed. The boy’s parents and sister made it to the U.S. side where they were apprehended by the Border Patrol and returned to Mexico to identify the body.
Fox 29, March 19 (excerpt via MSN):
Children and a woman drowned in the Rio Grande as they tried to get away from border patrol agents.
…Jesus Vargas captured this video where you can see people trying to swim across the Rio Grande river. This after U.S. Border Patrol agents tried to stop an alleged human smuggling attempt, several people were detained, others jumped in the river and made it across. Vargas says 3 drowned and he saved one 13-year-old boy. CBP says 2 drowned.
New York Times, March 26 (excerpt):
A 9-year-old migrant girl drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande into Texas with her family, according to federal authorities, the first reported death of a child in a new surge of migration along the southwestern border.
U.S. Border Patrol agents responding to a rescue call found a mother and two children, all three unconscious, on an island in the river that separates the United States from Mexico. The agents were able to resuscitate the mother and the younger child, a 3-year-old boy.
The older child was transferred to emergency medics in Eagle Pass, Texas, but remained unresponsive and was pronounced dead after the March 20 episode, according to a statement released on Friday by the federal Customs and Border Protection agency.
The rescued mother was Guatemalan; her children were both Mexican nationals, the statement said.
At the end of the Times article, two migrants tell why they took the journey:
Elisabet Arreada Lopez and her two young daughters are among a large number of families who have recently set out from Guatemala hoping to start a new life in the United States. Her husband, who was already living in Ohio, hired a coyote to help them.
After arriving in Reynosa, Mexico, they floated on inner tubes across the Rio Grande to reach Texas, where they encountered the U.S. Border Patrol, she said.
“People back home were saying this is the moment to cross,” Ms. Arreada said from the bus station in Brownsville, where federal agents had dropped her off after processing.
…Alberto Gomez, 32, another migrant who recently arrived in Brownsville, said that lack of opportunity in Honduras drove him to try to settle his family in the United States.
“I couldn’t even make enough for us to eat, things were getting so bad,” said Mr. Gomez, who sold car accessories on the streets.
“We watched the news to see how the situation is in this country. When Biden won the election, we decided to take this path,” he said.
Earlier this month, he, his wife and three children made the journey by bus to northern Mexico.
A few days after reaching Matamoros, he paid $200 to a guide who supplied his family of five with three inner tubes to cross the Rio Grande.
Once in the United States, he said, the family walked for two hours, until they encountered Border Patrol agents and turned themselves in.
After being processed at a station, he said, “we gained free entry.”
Soon they were on their way by bus to Newark, where relatives awaited them.
This NY Times article was buried deep in the paper: “A version of this article appears in print on March 27, 2021, Section A, Page 17 of the New York edition with the headline: 9-Year-Old Girl Drowns Crossing Rio Grande Into the U.S.”
Two years ago the drowning of a migrant child under President Trump was front page news.
At Monday’s just concluded press briefing by Psaki, again no questions or comments on the child drownings.
