Nearly Three Dozen Coronavirus Cases Confirmed in US

Posted on 21 February 2020

US health officials have confirmed that there are 34 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in the United States.

Out of the nearly three dozen confirmed cases, 21 of them are people who were repatriated by the State Department — many who were onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, which had been quarantined due to an outbreak of the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had warned the State Department against allowing fourteen Americans who tested positive for the Coronavirus to be flown back to the US on a flight with over 300 people who were not infected.

The plane had a plastic-lined enclosure to separate the infected passengers from the others, according to a report from the Washington Post.

“These individuals were moved in the most expeditious and safe manner to a specialized containment area on the evacuation aircraft to isolate them in accordance with standard protocols,” the departments said in a statement according to the Post.

Only thirteen of the cases are people who were not part of repatriation efforts by the State Department.

While the virus has not yet spread among the general public, a top official at the CDC said that it is likely to happen.

“It’s very possible, even likely, that it may eventually happen,” said Dr. Nancy Messonier, a top official at the CDC.

Officials also said that they are expecting more cases among the people who were on board the Diamond Princess, according to a report from the Hill.
