HBO Delivers Anti-Motherhood Feminist Dark Comedy Series

Posted on 12 August 2020

Abortion is becoming a popular genre in Hollywood nowadays. Mainstream shows and independent movies are eager to dive into the empowering and somehow hilarious idea that is killing an unborn child. But now HBO is going deeper by attacking the very concept of motherhood itself. And it’s supposed to be funny. On August 12, HBO announced a partnership with UK broadcaster Sky to produce the “darkly comic horror series” known as The Baby. The series is described as follows: “When 38-year-old Natasha is unexpectedly landed with a baby, her life of doing what she wants, when she wants, dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative and with violent powers, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a horror show. Where does it come from? What does it want? And what lengths will Natasha have to go to in order to get her life back?” True, a selfish feminist’s worst nightmare would probably be a baby, but that’s not how series creators Siân Robins-Grace and Lucy Gaymer frame it. In an interview with Variety, the two remarked: “With ‘The Baby,’ we want to explore the powerful anxiety around the question of whether or not to have children…The ambivalence of not knowing, the bafflement at everyone else’s certainty and the suspicion that the whole thing is one millennia-long scam. We’re thrilled to be working with such a phenomenal team of producers to help us bring this weird baby into the world with HBO and Sky.” Apparently, women wanting to be mothers could actually be a “millennia-long scam.” Never mind thousands of years of motherhood being celebrated or necessary. Never mind the untold grief thousands of women feel every year through miscarriage. Two women you’ve never heard of before now believe it could all be a lie, so we must accept that as true. Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said as much when she commented: “Siân and Lucy’s exploration of motherhood is as funny and resonant as it is twisted…’The Baby’ gives voice to all the women who just don’t know. We’re thrilled to be partnering again with Jane Featherstone, Carolyn Strauss, and our friends at Sky.” It’s yet another display of feminist propaganda being determined to destroy the very idea of motherhood. First, they praise abortion. Now, they’re out to literally demonize children. I hate to break it to HBO, but that isn’t “resonant” and it’s definitely not “funny.” There is no current release date scheduled for the eight-episode season, though filming is expected to begin in 2021.
