Biden Quotes Mao to ABC’s Roberts, She Refuses to Push Back or Question

Posted on 23 August 2020

For at least the second time in two months, Democratic nominee Joe Biden used a quote made famous by communist leader Mao Tse-tung when it came to women. Calling it simply an “old expression,” Biden got away with quoting the communist monster (who killed millions of people) because his interviewer, ABC’s Robin Roberts refused to call out, push back, or question her candidate as to why he was doing it. The interview, which was done for Sunday night’s 20/20, was previewed on that morning’s Good Morning America and was touted by co-anchor Eva Pilgrim. “In an exclusive ABC News interview with Robin Roberts and David Muir, Robin asking the Democratic nominee about why he chose Harris as his running mate,” she announced. Biden’s quotation of the communist butcher came when explaining why he chose Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) to be his running mate. “You alluded, Mr. Vice President, about the fact that you made it clear early on that you were going to select a woman to be your running mate, you select a woman of color, did you do that to rally your base, did you feel pressure to select a black woman,” Roberts teed him up. Biden explained that he wanted his administration to “look like the people, look like the country” and noted, “51 percent of the people in this country are women.” He then dropped the Mao quote, saying, “As that old expression goes, ‘women hold up half sky.’”     After Biden was caught using the quote back in July, during a virtual fundraising event he was doing with former Obama official Valerie Jarrett, Washington Examiner political reporter Joseph Simonson wrote on the origin of the quote. “The phrase comes from a proclamation by Mao in the mid-20th century that helped grant certain rights to women in China. The phrase became commonplace in China at the time, often appearing on pieces of propaganda in factories or other industrial areas,” he said. Roberts was unfazed by Biden’s quote. Keeping the focus on his VP selection, she wondered: “So, what was the tipping point?” And for the rest of the clip, ABC showed Biden rambling on about why Harris was “the closest and the best” fit for him. This came over a year after Roberts made a fool out of herself when she bought into the hoax hate crime allegations from actor Jussie Smollett. As his story unraveled just as few days after she refused to call his claims “alleged”, ABC defended her softball interview and she tried to rewrite history by saying she saw “a lot of red flags.” Now, there was a bright red communist flag fluttering in her face and she abdicated her duty to question it. Then again, she was interviewing the liberal media’s candidate for president and the mission was to defend him at all costs. This refusal to press Biden as to why he was quoting someone who killed millions of his own people was made possible because of lucrative sponsorships from Amazon, State Farm, and Hyundai. JOE BIDEN: No. I didn't feel pressure to select a black woman. But what I do think, and I said it before, you've heard me say it, I probably said it on your show with you—is that the government should look like the people, look like the country. 51 percent of the people in this country are women. As that old expression goes, “women hold up half sky.” And in order to succeed you got to be dealt in across the board. And no matter what you say, you cannot -- I cannot understand and fully appreciate what it means to walk in her shoes, to be an African-American woman with an Indian-American background, a child of immigrants. She can't assume what it's like to walk in my shoes. But we do know we have the same value set, and I really mean that, and so it was easy for me. It was an easy decision to make. Although, there were an enormous number of really qualified women. I spoke to every single woman that was on the list before and as the day I made the choice, before anything was announced, I called every single one of them. ROBERTS: So, what was the tipping point? BIDEN: The tipping point was – I was – it was – there were several things, but it just seemed to fit the closest and the best. I thought I understood and I think I understand her – where she comes from, what her instincts are, her character. I watched her take on the big banks, I watched her take on the gun lobby, I watched her – the way she was a prosecutor, I've watched her as a United States senator. You know, I mean, she's an incredible woman who just – and on the Judiciary Committee, which I used to chair for years. I watch her just insist on getting the answers and not relenting until she got the answers. And so, I just -- it just seemed to fit. [Cuts back to live] EVA PILGRIM: And you can watch the rest of Robin and David's exclusive joint interview with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on a 20/20 special airing tonight 8:00 p.m. Eastern right here on ABC.
