Alright, alright, alright. Actor Matthew McConaughey deems running for governor a “true consideration.”
In an interview with Rania Mankarious of Crime Stoppers of Houston’s “The Balanced Voice” podcast, McConaughey expressed his interest in potentially running for office. While he didn’t explicitly say he had filled out the election forms, he did allude to the option.
"I'm looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What's my category in my next chapter of life that I'm going into?"
Oh, boy. Having a net worth of $140 million just isn’t enough for McConaughey. We may have another celebrity on the ballot in the coming future.
This isn’t McConaughey’s first mention of wanting to be a part of the political scene. Back in November, he declared his interest while on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” In the fall he said the timing wasn’t right but that “Politics seems to be a broken business ... politics needs to redefine its purpose. And so, as I move forward in life, yes, am I gonna consider leadership roles where I can be most useful? I'd love to. I'm doing that regardless.”
Additionally, back in November on the Hugh Hewitt show when asked if he was ever going to run for anything, McConaughey said that it wasn’t up to him. “It would be up to the people more than it would me … when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”
Perhaps now, however, as current Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is up for reelection next year and plenty of celebs had a word or two of disagreement with him, the “True Detective” star may take his shot.
While McConaughey didn’t specifically say where he would fall on the political scale, he’s previously presented himself as favoring the middle ground. He’s been known to support a ban on guns, but he’s also encouraged citizens to embrace Donald Trump, and wanted political compromise and unity. So, it's unclear if even he knows where he would stand.
If he does indeed run and starts to campaign, it will give Dallas Buyers Club a whole new meaning.
